Eli Wallach (1915-2014)

Another of those great actors who was somehow never nominated for an Oscar. Which movie boasts your favorite Eli Wallach performance?

In strange but true, news of the weird: i never saw The Good, The Bad and the Ugly until just a couple of weeks ago. I'd always THOUGHT i must have seen it -- the theme song was on the transistor radio 24-7 when i was a kid, and I'd seen the poster with Clint & faithful companion Cheroot. But when pressed I could not describe the plot. So I called it up on Netflix and was floored. I thought the drill was that "Spaghetti" westerns were supposed to be clumsy if charming & unintentionally funny. Boy did I have that wrong -- and of course for me Tuco absolutely owned that very, very good movie.

I was a kid when it came out and didn't see it until I was in my thirties. The buzz when it originally came out was exactly as you said -- fun but, you know, not art. Whereas now, if we went back and nominated movies retroactively, it would receive a sackful of nominations for things like best picture, actor, director, supporting actor and score. It's a great movie.

Hey, thanks Andrew! I'll work up a post about the Versatile Blogger Award in the next couple of days. The deal breaker might be writing seven interesting things about myself -- I am the world's most boring man.

"He's not a lover, he's not a fighter, he's a writer. He's the world's least interesting man." -- beer commercial about me.
